I got the job without meeting the required years of experience
My job description for my current role says "5 years of experience in full-cycle recruiting needed".
🫢 I only had 3 years of experience when I was considered for the role.
How did I make it through?
👩🏻🏫 I shadowed, learned and asked for opportunities from recruiters I worked with
· When I was a recruiting coordinator transitioning to being a recruiter, I paid attention to the recruiters I worked with. I picked up on what worked, what didn’t work, and what I personally would bring to the recruitment process. I got to work and asked for work that would help me upskill.
🚀 I went above and beyond my previous role
· I unexpectedly had to become the ONE solo recruiter after only 3 months as a recruiter because my manager left. I was left with 40-60+ roles by myself. I had to step up and learn to be a recruiter FAST.
🥊 I didn’t shy away from challenges
· I was ready to take on difficult hiring managers, processes, decisions, and conversations. I leaned on my expertise and made it clear what I brought into the rooms I was in. I challenged back when needed.
📣 I shared these experiences as examples in the interview process
· I didn’t have 5 years of experience, but I translated why the 3 years would be relevant and equivalent. I made sure to highlight the quality of my experience, what I did, the impact, and the results.
All this to say, some roles look for specific years of experience, but it's possible to translate the quality of your experience > years of experience. If you've gone above and beyond and had to take on work beyond your current role, highlight that and use it to level up!
