How I landed my job in a ✨ galaxy far far away ✨

As in, how did I land my job at Lucasfilm?

I really wish it was a more exciting, daring, galactic adventure, but it started with me just going to the Lucasfilm career site, seeing that there was a recruiting coordinator position, and applying.

*insert PEW PEW PEW sounds*

Maybe this goes against a lot of what is talked about here on LinkedIn; that you need to network and make relationships because applying isn’t enough. But applying was enough to get me through the door.

I did other things to prepare though.

✅ Had my network review my resume
✅ Prepared questions for the interview
✅ Practiced interviewing with my network
✅ Wrote and rewrote my resume against the job description
✅ Prepared examples of my work as it was listed on the job description
✅ Lots of research on the company; both Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company
✅ For fun: watched a lot of Star Wars

I share this for #StorytellingTuesday as well as a reminder that

1. Going to the career site is your best friend
2. Directly applying does still work
3. Having a network of people to help you during the process is important
4. A network doesn’t always mean the people you meet here on LinkedIn
5. My network consisted of people I met during college and in my first internships and jobs
6. While some say I’m lucky, I believe that luck is when preparations meets opportunity
7. Sometimes the biggest adventures begin as simple stories
