Referrals: Are you Warm or Cold?
Are you a Cold or Warm referral?
🧊 Cold referral: You want to be referred for a job, so you find a recruiter, someone who works at the company, someone you don’t know and doesn’t know you, and ask for them to send in your name and resume for a job.
☀️ Warm referral: You want to be referred for a job, so you ask someone who knows you professionally and can vouch for your skills and work ethic, and can speak to why you’d be a fit for the job.
🧊 Cold referral: Demands and asks with no two-way street in mind.
☀️ Warm referral: Builds trust and reputation with relationships.
🧊 Cold referral: “Hey, I don’t know this person and never worked with them, but they messaged me that they’re interested in X role. I don’t know if they are qualified for it.” - Person who doesn’t know you
☀️ Warm referral: “Hey, X is from my network and while I haven’t worked with them, I’ve gotten to know them and know they have some of the qualifications you’re looking for.” - Person who knows you
Always be the warm referral. Don’t just throw your referral to chance. Make sure you’ve got the support and backing to put your best self forward!
