THIS is why you should care about those job descriptions!
🗣 When applying to jobs, be sure to copy, paste, and save the job description somewhere once you apply!
Why???
Lots of reasons!
🚫 The role can sometimes be unposted or lost.
📑 If you get the call for the interview, you’ve got something to help you prepare.
🤔 As you’re preparing, build examples and questions around the job description.
🙋🏻♀️ If you’re in the interview, reference the examples and questions you came up with.
👩🏻💻 If you get the job, you’ve got a reference on what is expected of you to do and deliver.
📚As you’re on the job, you’ve got a reference to see if you’ve learned and done all the responsibilities listed.
🎖 As you learn and develop the skills, you can add them to your resume.
✍🏼 As you’re writing your resume, you can reference how to write the action you took + the impact you had.
BOOOM 💥
How does this work in practice? Well, this is how I’ve prepared for interviews and continue to grow my career.
✅ If something in the job description doesn’t make sense or I am curious to learn more, I’ll make sure to ask about it.
✅ If there’s a skill or responsibility I need to grow into, I’ll highlight it and find ways to get experience or at the very least get an understanding of it, and then focus on growing in that area.
✅ In every job, I revisit the job description every few months and take inventory of the responsibilities and requirements for my performance.
✅ I’ll make the job description a working document and list the projects and deliverables under specific responsibilities or skill sets as a personal tracker.
✅ I’ll use these specifically when it’s time for performance reviews or asking for a raise or promotion.
So…..yeah! Save the job description! Who knew those annoying things could actually be helpful? 🤷🏻♀️😉
Did any of these surprise you? Let me know!
