Balance in your interviews is the way to win!
One of the best ways to approach interviews is to have balance ⚖️
There’s a theme in some of the reasons why a hiring manager doesn’t move forward with candidates and it’s because their interviews lean too much in one direction.
Here are some examples and how to approach it:
🙎🏻♀️ Candidate: talked only about their own success.
👤 Hiring Manager: questions their ability to collaborate, questions their ego.
🤝🏼 Approach: talk about your success, but also share how you achieved success with a team, ESPECIALLY if the role and requirements itself say you need to be a collaborator and/or will be working with others/cross-functional teams.
🙎🏻♀️ Candidate: took a long time to answer one question/jumped around/went off tangent.
👤 Hiring Manager: questions their ability to communicate clearly and staying organized.
⏸ Approach: provide answers that are clear and concise. Have examples that are straightforward, but also pause and ask the interviewer if they’d like to hear more details. Ask if your answer is what they are looking for, and be open to pivoting just in case.
🙎🏻♀️ Candidate: didn’t answer the question, even after I tried to nudge them in the direction I was looking for.
👤 Hiring Manager: questions their ability of that specific experience or skillset and follow through on directions.
👀 Approach: be mindful of cues that the interviewers could be giving you. If they keep asking the same question, but in different ways, they are probably looking for a specific answer. Don’t keep using the same answer/example, but dig deeper if needed.
🙎🏻♀️ Candidate: didn’t seem open to new ideas and felt their expertise was at its peak.
👤 Hiring Manager: questions their ego and ability to be open to new ways of thinking, and diversity of thought.
⬆️ Approach: Share best practices you’ve learned in your career, but also be open to learning and executing new ideas, ESPECIALLY if the company is known for innovation, creativity, and pushing boundaries.
All of the above give examples of giving your answers and being yourself but making sure you have a balance of answers that help provide a holistic representation of who you are and how you show up on the job.
