Self-Advocacy Tips

I was recently asked about how to self-advocate in conversations about a raise, promotion, or consideration for a new opportunity in your company.

Here’s what I do that helps give me a foundation when going into these conversations:

👏🏼 Have a Brag Book
It’s not bragging if it’s facts 🔥 Just saying 🙅🏻‍♀️ Hopefully you are tracking every task and project you’ve been given, who you’re working with, the milestones, and how you’ve delivered it. Did someone give you a compliment? Save it and share it.

📄 Leverage your Job Description
What were the roles and responsibilities of the role you were hired into? Are you currently doing them all? Not only are you doing them, but make sure to detail the depth and breadth of what you’ve accomplished.

🚀 To Infinity & Beyond
Make note of the areas where you went above and beyond. Where did you go the extra mile? Even better if you received compliments about it.

💪🏼 State your Strengths
You might have been asked this in your interviews. Now it’s time to turn it around. Share where your strengths have best served you in your role, tasks, projects, relationships, etc.

📈 Value Add & Impact
This is the most important point. What has all the above resulted in? Did it move the needle on something? Improved a process? Elevated the overall business? Anyone can do the work and call it done, but doing something with a lasting impact can set you apart from the rest.

Then ask for the damn thing 💰 (Okay, I can help with a more polished way to ask for this if anyone needs 🤣)
