I’ve been using the same resume for 10 years 🤷🏻‍♀️

📄 Made on Microsoft Word.
🙅🏻‍♀️ No template.
🙅🏻‍♀️ No graphics.
⌨️ Times New Roman font.
❌ No frills.

I thought to be in the entertainment or video games industry, I needed a “creative” resume. But I never changed the format.

I learned that it’s all in the content!

Here are some tips:

1️⃣ Learn to summarize

The hardest thing about resumes is writing them. Practice summarizing what you’ve done, what you achieved, and your impact. We tend to write a paragraph per bullet point, but instead, try to shorten descriptions to one sentence. If needed, make a new bullet point.

2️⃣ Leverage the job description

The job description tells you the skills needed for the role. Take each bullet point under the “Requirements” section and turn that into a bullet point on your resume. If you have a Skills section on your resume, list the skill you have that is on the JD.

3️⃣ Impact > Responsibilities

Recruiters and hiring managers don’t want to see what you do day-to-day. They want to see what you’ve done to change something, make progress somewhere, and how you’ve moved something forward. Here’s where your summarizing skills come in handy. If you have data to back up results, be sure to add that.

4️⃣ Keep what’s relevant

We sometimes have the tendency to want to add everything to our resumes. However, extra “fluff” might work against you since recruiters and hiring managers can be laser-focused on the skills and experience they’re looking for. Bonus: transferrable skills are still relevant. It’s all in how you summarize it.

5️⃣ One page is good, but that’s my preference

I’ve always kept my resume at one page. Maybe one or twice it went to the second page by a few lines, but I follow the tips above to trim it down as much as possible.

⭐️ I was able to make my career happen with the same resume.
⭐️The only thing that changed was the content and I based it on the job description of the jobs I was applying to.

Now it’s your turn! I see a lot of people get stuck on the formatting, but I hope some of you out there find this helpful!
