How to get into the Video Game Industry

What advice do I have in getting into the video game industry with no experience?

While I don’t have one simple answer, try the 🎮 PRESENCE CHALLENGE 🎮

What do I mean? Try adjusting and optimizing your tone, interest, communities, resume, LinkedIn, and portfolio so that it screams ✨ interest in video games ✨ Start doing things as if you’re already in the industry you want to be in.

🎯 Fill your feed with video games content and engage with it - as in comment, share resources, share insights, have discussions, and repost.

🎯 Follow, connect, and engage with people in the industry. Don’t directly ask for jobs, but apply the above to your connections. AKA: Networking.

🎯 Find communities, groups, and organizations that focus on the specific niche you want to get into in the industry and utilize resources they offer.

🎯 Even if you don’t have direct work experience, work on side projects that showcase your interest — scripts, game art, graphic design, animation, projects and productions that showcase skillsets typically needed in jobs you’re interested in.

🎯 Don’t know how to start the above? 👆🏼 Find a job description of the job you want and start tackling the required skillsets through other opportunities. Don’t underestimate skills from outside industries.

✅ The above sets up your brand as an active participant in the industry
✅ You start building your credibility and become a reputable voice
✅ It shows you are invested and passionate about the industry
✅ You show proactiveness in working towards your goal

I believe it’s not enough to just WANT to be in the industry, but also to SHOW how you’re working to get into the industry, engaging with the community, and working towards the career while job seeking.

YOU NEED TO HAVE PRESENCE.
